I walked into the fitness gym after a month long hiatus, feeling pumped and ready to go. I began to stretch and to encourage myself with, “You haven’t worked out in a while, but that’s ok. You’re here now!” I headed straight for my favorite workout machine–the elliptical. I stepped on and when asked by Jill, my personal virtual trainer, what kind of workout I would like to do, I chose a good 15 minute forward/reverse, level 5 workout, with the mountain view. So I get started, and I am moving at a steady pace. Five minutes into it, Jill tells me that I must now go in reverse. I begin to go in the opposite direction, the muscles in my legs begin to scream and by this time I am wanting to quit. Thoughts ran through my mind, “You know you haven’t been here in a while so you have to take it easy. Go ahead and stop!” The thoughts sound very convincing, but another thought rose above them all, “No, I will not practice quitting. I will finish what I start!” So I pressed through it. Five minutes, ten minutes, and by now I’m quoting scripture, “I endure all things for the elect’s sakes, that they may also obtain the salvation which is in Christ Jesus with eternal glory.” (2 Timothy 2:10). Finally, I reached the end of my workout and felt tired, but great! Life works in much the same way. We can set out to lose weight, to finish school, to stay married, to pray for a whole hour, etc, and if we rationalize quitting in these small things, we will quit when it comes to bigger things. Stick with it and you will have strengthened your ability to endure. You must practice finishing!
“I press on toward the goal to win the [supreme and heavenly] prize to which God in Christ Jesus is calling us upward.” Philippians 3:14 (NLT)
Thank You for giving me the grace to finish in life. Even in small things, help me to practice sticking with it until the end. In Jesus’ name, Amen.
