Be Who You Are

“But ye are a chosen generation, a royal priesthood, an holy nation, a peculiar people; that ye should shew forth the praises of him who hath called you out of darkness into his marvellous light.”  1 Peter 2:9

One day while in prayer, God spoke to my heart, “My purpose for your life is for you to be yourself.”  “Be myself?”  I responded.  “That’s all I have to do?”  Yes, that was it.  What God was trying to teach me was how great of an impact His people can have in this world if we simply focus on being ourselves in Him.  We are seed in the earth and we can’t produce for God’s Kingdom as long as we are running from our own reflection, fearing our own selves, and trying to blend in with everyone else.  God made you unique and that uniqueness is what makes you special.  The world will try to say, “Be more like us.”  You will have to choose to either be accepted by the world and conform to it, or receive the acceptance of God and be transformed by Him.  Allow your personality to hook up with the personality of the Holy Spirit and you will accomplish great things.  Being yourself can make you feel like an outsider, like an outcast, like you just don’t fit in.  It takes love and courage.  It takes boldness.  It takes plain old guts.  All of the people of God throughout history that have had a great impact in this earth, had to make the same decision that we must make.  If they would have chosen to be like everyone else, they wouldn’t have been able to do the great things they did.  It makes sense then for God to tell me that my purpose is to be myself.  Great things come from focusing on being.  First the seed is sown into the ground, then the shoot, then the tree, and later the fruit.  First, we choose to be ourselves in God, then we begin to live the life we were born to live and then, we do the works we were born to do.  But it all starts with choosing to be yourself.

Prayer: Father God, thank You for being my God and for making me unique.  I pray You help me be myself in You, even if it’s met with disapproval or ridicule.  Even if it causes me to have to stand alone, help me be brave and focus on being who You have created me to be.  I give You the glory.  In Jesus’ Name, Amen.
