Open Your Eyes

“He said, ‘Do not be afraid, for those who are with us are more than those who are with them.’ Then Elisha prayed and said, ‘O LORD, please open his eyes that he may see.’ So the LORD opened the eyes of the young man, and he saw, and behold, the mountain was full of horses and chariots of fire all around Elisha” (2 Kings 6:16–17, ESV)

The passage, from which the opening verse is taken, has a very interesting story line. The king of Syria had determined that Elisha was his opponent who had been constantly divulging his secret army plans to the king of Israel. So, the king of Syria sent an army to Dothan to capture Elisha, the man of God.

When Elisha and his servant arose the next morning, they were surrounded by a great Syrian army. The servant, frightened and confused, asked his master what they should do. Elisha’s response is recorded in the opening verse, where he asked the Lord to open the eyes of the servant to be able see what the actual situation was. When the servant’s eyes were “opened” with spiritual sight, he could see that the battle was not for them to fight—the army with them was far larger than the Syrian army.

Many times we get blinded and overwhelmed by the circumstances of life. All we see are the problems in front of us. It is no wonder that the Word of God admonishes us to “look unto Jesus” (Hebrews 12:2), who is the author and finisher of our faith.

God is with you. He constantly reminds you of that comforting fact with over ninety-nine “fear not” verses throughout His Word. No matter the circumstance, regardless of how long it has taken or will take, God is with you. God is still speaking to His daughters saying, “Fear not!” God is with you, not only to see you through and strengthen you, but He is with you to protect you (Isaiah 41:10). Just open your eyes into His Word and His promises. Know that He is God.

Open your eyes. Your circumstance is not what it appears to be. You are surrounded by a host of angels who guard your feet and protect you (Psalm 91:11). Fear not, God is with you. He loves you because you are His daughter. You are a daughter of the King.

Prayer: I will not fear nor be moved, I will open my eyes to You and know that You are God. You love me, You watch over me, You protect me.
