Pay Your Debts and Live on the Rest

“Then she came and told the man of God. And he said, Go, sell the oil, and pay thy debt, and live thou and thy children of the rest.” 2 Kings 4:7

When Elisha’s servant died, his widow came to Elisha in desperation. Her late husband’s creditor was coming after her, and since she didn’t have any money, they were threatening to take her two children away to be slaves. So Elisha asked her what did she have in her house. She told him all she had was a jar of oil. Elisha then gave her specific instructions. He told her to go and borrow many empty vessels from her neighbors, go home, close the door behind her, and pour the oil into all of the empty vessels. Well, miraculously God took her one jar of oil and multiplied it until all of the jars were full! Then Elisha told her to do something I believe we all need to hear. He said, “Go, sell the oil and pay your debts, and you and your sons can live on the rest.”

In the US, tax season has arrived and many are getting a large lump sum of money. It would be wise to do the same thing Elisha told the widow woman: “Pay your debts and live on the rest.”

My sister, you prayed for God to provide and now, here it is. Don’t waste this opportunity. Seize it by using the increase He’s given you to set yourself up for financial success in this year.

Prayer: Father God, thank you for speaking directly to my heart. Help me to make wise choices when it comes to large lump sums of money you bring into my hands. Direct me Holy Spirit. Help me resist the temptation to waste financial opportunities that come my way. Help me to be self-controlled and use what you give me wisely. In Jesus’ name, Amen.
