Refreshing Rest

“Come to Me, all of you who are weary and burdened, and I will give you rest.” Matthew 11:28NIV

Ours is an age of anxiety and stress because ours is an age of speed from how we prepare our food (microwave) to how we eat our food (fast food restaurants), to even how we get our news. If watching it on the news isn’t enough we want to make hearing the news faster by digitizing that information to the internet. From Christmas to New Years we are often excited it is here and exhausted when it is over. We all need rest, not just in our bodies but also in our minds and hearts.

We take pride in explaining to each other how busy we are but feel a little guilty if we relax. God did not intend for His people to live in a state of perpetual hurry. His own example in Genesis to the promises of the New Testament including the life of Jesus shows clearly that God wants us to discover rest and refreshment for our mind, body and soul.

In this same passage, Jesus says, “For my yoke is easy and my burden is light.” I believe this is so because our burdens are temporarily compared to eternity and everything we give to him He can handle and in return He gives us the strength to handle anything He allows.

Also a part of that passage in Matthew 11:29, Jesus tells us to, “Take my yoke upon you and learn from me, I am gentle and humble in heart, and you will find rest for your souls.” If we yoke ourselves to Jesus and follow His leading, rest for our souls comes because He who is gentle and humble in heart will never lead us anywhere and in anything where He is not with us or cannot sustain us.

Weariness comes from bearing heavy burdens for too long. I hope that God’s people will come into a place of rest and not feel guilty when God, our body or mind is calling us to rest. This is the year of “Refreshing.”

Prayer: Dear Lord, as I come upon this New Year, I pray that I resolve to be yoked to You – the place where I will find rest and refreshing for my mind, body and soul. I thank you that you go before me and create footsteps for me to follow and those footsteps can be trusted because you made them first. Thank you for never being in a hurry and showing your people the power and importance of rest. In Jesus Name!
