“Rejoice in the Lord always. I will say it again: Rejoice!” Philippians 4:4 NIV
Rejoice in the Lord always. Always rejoice in the Lord. Either way, it does not say rejoice in people, jobs, friends, clothes, cars, houses, position, fame or fortune. It does not say rejoice in our circumstances – it says, “rejoice in the Lord!” Meaning our joy is in one place alone – God.
I have lived long enough to know that this is true. When our joy is truly in Jesus, there is a contentment and peace that is indescribable and not understandable. We can rejoice when the object of our affection is God. This is a process and a journey. When we come to the place in our lives and realize the economy changes, people come and go, houses are gained and lost, jobs changed, people change, we get older, sick or laid off… God is the only one that cannot change.
There is nothing really in the world we can rejoice in but Him. We can enjoy lots of things but even those are fleeting and changeable. God is neither fleeting or changeable. So when life, circumstances and/or people change, there is a promise and a guarantee that the One we rejoice in has a beautiful and refining plan that somehow in time, results in praise, glory and honor when Jesus Christ is revealed in us.
So don’t get bent out of shape in your trials, rejoice in the One who knows how to sanctify us and make us whole and holy. Rejoice knowing God loves you. Rejoice that He is always faithful and true to His Word and character and consistent in all He is and does. This is why we can “always” rejoice!
Prayer: Father God, the Bible tells us to delight ourselves in you and you will give us the desires of our hearts. I don’t know how this works, but I do know that you instruct us to rejoice, to pray, read and study your Word. You want us in our own personality to reflect in the world who you are. Lord, I give myself again too you trusting that you know how to sanctify me to be more like you. You know how the circumstances, people and things in my life fit together like a beautiful puzzle to make me more like you. Show me how to delight myself in you. Because you are God, the Creator of the universe, me and everything in it, I trust that the things going on in the world and my life are going to work together for a purpose, and in this I can rejoice. In Jesus’ Name!!!
