Sound the Alarm

I was staying in a hotel out of town for a wedding.  It was 6:00am and my daughter had awakened unusually early to start the day.  I picked her up out of the crib and sat down on the bed.  Immediately, I heard a loud siren go off.  I looked around the room and saw a light flashing on the wall. It was the fire alarm!  My husband and I jumped up, grabbed the kids, and rushed towards the door.  In our mad dash to get out, he opted to forgo looking for his shoes and off we went.  As we opened the door, the smell of smoke greeted us, and reality set in that this was not a drill.  We sprinted through the hall and down six flights of steps.  Along the way a few others joined us.  No one slowed down until we were outside.  However, when we got there we were shocked to see people working out in the gym.  They looked surprised to see us leaving, as if we were foolish for even bothering.  As we approached the front of the hotel, we were even more surprised to see that there were only about 20 people waiting outside despite the annoying loud alarm, strong smell of smoke, and large fire trucks in plain view.  Unfortunately, this is how it will be at the coming of Christ.  People will be carrying on business as usual when the alarm sounds and Jesus returns to take us home.  Some will hear the alarm and be prepared, while others won’t.  Whether Jesus returns tomorrow or a million years from now, be prepared for His return.  The five foolish bridesmaids were left out of the wedding ceremony because they weren’t ready (Matthew 25:1-13).  Just as the five foolish bridesmaids didn’t have time to prepare at the sound of the bridegroom’s coming, once He appears, we won’t have time either.  Therefore, daughters be ready.

“And He will send His angels with a great sound of a trumpet, and they will gather together His elect from the four winds, from one end of heaven to the other.” (Matthew 24:31 NKJV)

“And as it was in the days of Noah, so it will be also in the days of the Son of Man: They ate, they drank, they married wives, they were given in marriage, until the day that Noah entered the ark, and the flood came and destroyed them all. Even so will it be in the day when the Son of Man is revealed.” (Luke 17:26, 27, 30 NKJV)

Prayer Starter: Lord, I thank you for your warning and instruction to be prepared for your return.  Help me to take heed and to share this instruction with others that don’t know you.  In Jesus’ name, Amen.

A sincere thank you to our Daughters of the King Daily Devotional Writers.
