We Have You Surrounded!

Posted on Posted in devotions

Sin can surround you like SWAT police surrounds a home. It can announce to you loud and strong, “We have you surrounded. You might as well surrender!” That’s exactly how it feels when you are right there in the heat of the moment at the point of surrendering to sexual sin, giving in to fear and intimidation, giving in to an addiction, doing something to win man’s attention and approval, snapping on your husband, or losing your cool on the job with a co-worker. No one is exempt from feeling the pressure to sin. The deception comes when sin causes us to feel as though the only way out of the situation is to give into it and surrender. That’s not true. While sin can make you feel cornered, there is always a way out. God always make a way of escape (see 1 Corinthians 10:13). The problem we find is that we don’t pay attention to the way out because we don’t want to see it. We want to sin, but God can help us with that desire. Jesus is the way out of any high pressure situation. After instructing us to lay aside every weight and the sin that so easily besets (or surrounds) us, the Bible says, that we are to look to Jesus because He is the author and finisher of our faith. But what good can “looking to Jesus” do if you have 150 pounds of masculinity waiting in the bed for you? Or if someone has just passed you the joint and saying, “puff puff give!”? What good is “looking to Jesus” when your husband that has a habit of bringing out the worst in you, has done something spiteful and you say, “that’s it! I’ve had enough!” What good is “looking unto Jesus”? Once you are in the situation, if you didn’t “look to Jesus” before you got in it, it can make it very difficult to even consider Him when the pressure is on. The more time you spend with God alone, the more you’ll develop in moral strength and character. You can’t get in the heat of the moment and start quoting scriptures you haven’t said in years and expect to win over sin. Any professional athlete know that they have to prepare and practice before they enter any competition. We all get faced with pressures to sin, but how well we perform when the pressure is on depends on what we were doing before the heat became hot. If you are living in a high pressure environment, you will have to let God build you up in your spirit through prayer and looking for ways to apply His word so that your spirit can win over the weaknesses of your flesh. Let God show you in your time with Him how to not live so close to the edge in the temptation zone, but to live close to Him. You can win over sin, but only with His power and grace.

Do you see what this means—all these pioneers who blazed the way, all these veterans cheering us on? It means we’d better get on with it. Strip down, start running—and never quit! No extra spiritual fat, no parasitic sins. Keep your eyes on Jesus, who both began and finished this race we’re in. Study how he did it. Because he never lost sight of where he was headed—that exhilarating finish in and with God—he could put up with anything along the way: Cross, shame, whatever. And now he’s there, in the place of honor, right alongside God. When you find yourselves flagging in your faith, go over that story again, item by item, that long litany of hostility he plowed through. That will shoot adrenaline into your souls!” Hebrews 12:1-3 (MSG)

Oh Lord,
Thank you for helping a sista! Only You know my hang ups and the things I face on a daily basis. No matter how much pressure my flesh puts on me to fall, Lord you give me strength to overcome. I haven’t always won in my life, but I’m learning how to keep You at the forefront of my life and You’re showing me how to walk this thing out with Your power and grace. Thank You for making my spirit stronger than the weaknesses of my flesh. I love You and receive all of your strength today to win. In Jesus’ name, Amen.
