Why is God Jealous Over Me?

Posted on Posted in devotions

“Thus saith the LORD of hosts; I was jealous for Zion with great jealousy, and I was jealous for her with great fury.” Zechariah 8:2 (KJV)

Have you ever experienced jealousy? Maybe someone else received the promotion you felt you deserved, or your friend married the rich doctor while you remain single, or maybe someone else won the large plasma tv at the ticket raffle, while you won a $5 gift card. The agitating spirit that troubles you in these situations is a sinful jealous and envious spirit that is rooted in wanting what is not yours. On the contrary, picture yourself staring through the window of a restaurant and seeing your husband at a candle-lit dinner with a another woman. You notice him smile and touch her hand and you immediately burn with jealousy and anger. What you would feel in this situation is a jealousy that is founded in the fact that he belongs to you. Because your husband is in a covenant marriage with you, your jealousy is not evil. God is jealous over His children with similar jealousy. We belong to Him and are in covenant with Him. When someone else or something else consumes our thoughts and causes us to leave from our devotion to Him, He becomes jealous. He wants us to look to Him to save us, deliver us, comfort us, and guide us. He is our God and we are to love Him with all of our heart, mind, soul and strength.

Prayer: Father, forgive me of any ungodly jealousy that I have allowed in my heart. I know You will bless me in Your perfect timing. Forgive me if I have placed anyone or anything before You. Consume my thoughts. Fill my heart with a hunger and thirst for You. You are my God and I am Yours. In Jesus’ name, Amen.
