“Above all, clothe yourselves with love, which binds us all together in perfect harmony” Colossians 3:14, NLT.
While trying to tell my daughter how to handle a bully at school, I told her, “Maybe she’s going through problems at home and need a friend to talk to. You can tell her if she ever wants to talk, you’re there.” To which my daughter responded, “I did, and she told me to mind my own business!” Then she said, “I’m just going to leave her alone until she cools off.” Poor baby. My daughter tried and got her head bit off.
Have you ever met someone that was difficult to get along with? Maybe it’s someone in the work environment, in your home, school, church, etc. You try everything, but they insist on being impossible to talk to, work with, and befriend.
When it comes to oil and vinegar, they don’t mix. We find the only thing that can cause them to mix is an emulsifier. It is the outside agent that contains special compounds that wrap around the molecules in oil and causes them to bond with the water molecules in vinegar. For example, soap and egg yolk are both well-known emulsifiers, used to bring two very different substances together.
It’s not in our own natural ability to be patient and forbearing with difficult people. We need an outside Agent. God’s love is the great emulsifying agent that wraps around our hearts helping us do what we can’t naturally do on our own. God’s love will help you be wise and understanding when it comes to dealing with others. You’re the oil, they’re the vinegar and God is the soap.
Prayer: Lord, I need You and I humble myself under Your mighty hand. Help me be understanding and patient with others, just as You are patient and understanding with me. Fill my heart with Your love and teach me how to love the same way. In Jesus’ name I pray, Amen.
